Frequently Asked Questions…

MELINDA MCDONALD | ACUPUNCTURE & CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE | WOMENS HEALTH FERTILITY IVF SUPPORT PREGNANCY CARE | REDFERN SYDNEY NSW 2016

Is Acupuncture painful and sterile?

In general it is NOT PAINFUL. Acupuncture needles are super fine, thinner than than the thickness of hair and much thinner than hypodermic needles used for injections. Most people can’t even feel the needles going in, when they do there might be a temporary sensation or discomfort as the needle passes through the skin. Melinda uses a very gentle style of Acupuncture and her goal is to keep any discomfort to a minimum constantly adapting for the individual. Once the needles are in place you may feel a dull, heavy sensation or warmth. Many clients are needle-phobic but still enjoy having Acupuncture. Most people find the experience of Acupuncture to be incredibly relaxing and often fall asleep.

The needles are STERILE. As an AHPRA Registered Acupuncturist we only use single-use sterilised disposable needles.

What should I wear and do before my session?

Please wear loose comfortable clothing to enable full access to legs, arms and the abdomen. If you’re having a back treatment you may need to undress like you’re having a massage and you will be draped with towels for warmth and comfort.

Please try to avoid having coffee or caffeine just before the session as it may impact your ability to relax. It’s also best not to come hungry or too full i.e. a light snack prior or in between meals is the best time. Stay well hydrated before and after the session and go to the bathroom before your appointment to save time. There is a toilet at the clinic if needed.

What should I expect in an Acupuncture treatment?

All new clients are requested to complete a new client form online prior to their initial consultation and ideally send (or bring) any recent or relevant blood tests and medical investigations so that Melinda can review their medical history beforehand.

When you arrive, we will first sit down and discuss your health journey so far and clarify any medical history. During this time we will look at your tongue and feel your pulse, as part of the diagnostic process in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Then, with consent and some instructions, we will leave you in privacy to get on the Acupuncture table and begin the treatment. See also, what to wear. We may start with some gentle palpation and touch to further support our diagnosis and treatment approach. If it’s your first time having Acupuncture you will be guided through the process. In addition to Acupuncture, and with your consent, we may incorporate other methods of treatment including cupping, guasha, electroacupuncture, tuina massage, or moxibustion. The needles are usually left in for about 20-30minutes whist you relax or have a nap. A doorbell is left with you to ring at any time in case you want to finish earlier or need assistance.

After the treatment we will have a brief discussion about your treatment plan which may include Diet and Lifestyle Advice, Chinese Herbal Medicine prescription or recommended Supplements. These are optional and come at an additional cost and will be discussed as needed.
